Activity Network Diagram/Critical Path Analysis

Definition
The Activity Network Diagram (AND), also referred to as an Arrow Diagram or PERT Diagram, is used to identify the time-sequence of events necessary to achieve an objective. When timing is critical, this tool helps teams to understand the specific sequence of events that drives the time required to achieve the objective. The AND is also helpful in managing the implementation of a project requiring multiple activities.

This analysis has its origins in engineering and construction project management (PERT stands for Program Evaluation Review Technique) but has been applied widely. The Critical Pathway method of identifying and standardizing patient, hospital and doctor activities draws heavily on this concept.
